ALGAP
LOOKING TO EXPAND BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Association
of Lesbian and Gay Affirmative Psychotherapists (ALGAP), established in
1992, is a not-for-profit association of licensed therapists dedicated to providing counseling and therapy
to the gay/les/bi/trans community that is affirming, high-quality and accessible.
The organizational
work of ALGAP to date has been primarily carried out by the founding Board
of Directors. ALGAP's success has carried it to its next stage of development;
the Board realizes that it must expand its membership and diversify its
skill base to continue the organization's growth and success. To that
end, the ALGAP Board is seeking to recruit new members.
The current
board is comprised of four members. ALGAP seeks individuals who find our
mission compelling and who are interested in helping a grass-roots organization
grow from a mostly volunteer operation to a more mature organization serving
a larger number of clients.
Like most
nonprofit organizations, we are in need of individuals who can provide
significant assistance with fundraising, as well as those with legal,
financial management, and marketing expertise.
Board
Structure
Given the
current size of the board, ALGAP does not currently use a
committee structure. The work of the organization is managed mostly by
groups of two to three board members working on discrete projects. The board meets 9-10 times per year. Board work takes usually 4-6 hours a month. Board membership is organized by two-year terms.
Board
Members' Responsibilities
ALGAP's board is a working board; its members'
primary responsibility now is to guide the organization to greater maturity.
To that end, board members are expected to attend and participate in monthly
board meetings, and to follow through on agreed-upon tasks between meetings.
The average time commitment is 6 hours per month. There are no financial
contributions currently required of board members, although each board
member helps, in some capacity, to raise funds. As the board expands and
matures, some of the responsibilities will change as well; we seeks members
who can help us shape those expectations as well as adapt to them.
The Opportunity
Membership
on the ALGAP board presents a great opportunity for someone interested
in having a significant role and impact in shaping a service organization.
It is also an opportunity to work with a group of interesting, committed
professionals in order to make a real contribution to the LGBT community of the New York metropolitan area.
